It seems Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye, just like some of us is not a great fan of telenovelas and the local subtitles they come with.

The astute Ghanaian politician and former Speaker of Parliament has therefore called for the end of foreign telenovelas which are dubbed into Twi or any other Ghanaian language.

He further asked filmmakers in Ghana to produce original movies to facilitate this new direction.

The professor made this known at the inaugural memorial lecture of Okyenhene Ba Dr. Jones Akwasi Amoako Atta Ofori-Atta at the University of Ghana.

He argued that our development as people with a unique identity will be grossly eroded if this practice continues to persist.

“I cannot help adding one matter. I beg our actors and scriptwriters to come out with Ghanaian films. I get sick anytime I hear Twi words or Ga words pushed through some European or Asian lips. The practice should be stopped if we should develop as a people.

“These are the things that unmake a nation [sic]. It can never happen in Malaysia. It can never happen in India. It can never happen in any of the Asian tiger countries,” Professor Mike Ocquaye stated.
