On June 1st, the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL were awarded the marketing rights to Ghana. The Eagles will now be the first team licensed by the NFL to market themselves in Africa and especially Ghana.
Over the last week, the NFL has launched officially in Africa in an event called the NFL Africa: Touchdown. As part of the Touchdown programme, the NFL hosted training and skill camps for athletes of various ages culminating in a fan zone event where fans got to interact with players and see the Vince Lombardi trophy in all its glory.
Speaking exclusively to Citi Sports, Senior Vice President of Marketing for the Franchise Jen Kavanagh explained what this meant:
“Securing the marketing rights means we have the ability to bring our brand in to do fan development. We can start developing partnerships and move beyond Philadelphia into Ghana.”
She went on to elaborate on the future goals of the franchise:
“ We are trying to establish a digital and social presence, we will especially focus on social media, and use it help people understand what we are all about”
